Of the numerous homes in Vietnam, the modernly elegant 4.5×20 House is without a doubt amongst the various homes with the most elegant design in the country. The home constitutes a 2012 project by AHL architects associates and it is situated in the urban setting of Hanoi.
The home is a clever alternative to the dark and cramped, as well as unimaginative houses that are common to the area. The house itself was designed for a family with one children and grand mother.
The house itself was originally a house with a simple space with core in the middle and two bedrooms at two sides and the family wanted to have a house that was different from the existing house. As a result, a solution for traffic was required. Based on the family’s requirements, the program that was made was quite simple.
They planned to create a garage for two cars, a kitchen on the first floor, a bedroom for the grandmother, a living room on the second floor, as well as master bedrooms on the third floor, a small guest room, and a sky terrace. However, the family wanted the architects to focus on creating public spaces.
Using a simple ‘traffic creates space and function’ slogan, the architects changes the location of the staircase in 4.5×20 House. Unique and continuous spaces were then proposed based on the said new staircase.
In the house, the staircase and corridors were designed not as a simple path but as a continuous and sequential space that could function as a living space.
Situated in the urban setting of Hanoi, Vietnam, 4.5×20 House has an atrium which is located in the middle of the house. The architects create the atrium to bring daylight to lobbies and rooms without window to outside.
The house’s central space is the biggest volume in the house and it is where a double height living room is located, surrounded by an opening staircase, an atrium, and big windows.
